Onsite wastewater collection is commonly used in rural or undeveloped areas where municipal sewer infrastructure is unavailable. The collection is the first step in an onsite wastewater treatment system, which takes place at the house, residency, or business. This involves the use of septic tanks, which collect and temporarily store wastewater as it undergoes basic treatment as solids settle in the tank, and liquid effluent is filtered before being released from the “clear zone” and sent to the secondary treatment portion of the system. These systems are designed to prevent contamination of local water sources, ensuring that the treated water is safely reintroduced into the environment.
